Optimize Your Squarespace Website for SEO

SEO = Search Engine Optimization

Three scrabble letters spelling out SEO

Basically, SEO makes your website easy to find for the right people. When SEO best practices are in place, your ideal clients can land on your website via search. I know because it happened to me! Actual dream clients have found me from searching for “authentic branding”.

And the best part is, you don't need to be an SEO expert to make improvements.

I’m going to go over some of the basics you should know and towards the end of this blog I’ll share a brand new (as of March 2025) Squarespace AI tool that makes optimizing your website for search easy breezy.

Let’s explore the basic foundations of SEO…

1. Keyword Research: Think About It

Keywords (what people are typing into the search bar) are the building blocks of SEO. Start by conducting keyword research to identify the terms and phrases your target audience is searching for. I recommend thinking about what your ideal client might be looking for and then check out tools like Google's Keyword Planner and SEMrush which will help you discover relevant keywords. I also really love “Keywords Everywhere” which is a Google Chrome extension.

2. Quality Content: Add To Your Website

Create content (blogs, podcasts with show notes, etc.) that addresses the needs and interests of your audience. Make it informative, engaging, and easy to read while you incorporate keywords naturally.

The more content you have on your website, the more the search engines understand about what you offer. The more words and keywords, the higher likelihood your website will pop up as a search result.

3. Titles and Meta Descriptions

Your page titles and meta descriptions are the first things users see in search results. Write simple, descriptive titles (containing keywords) that encourage clicks. Meta descriptions should provide a brief summary of your content while weaving in keywords. Here’s an example of a title and meta description in a search result…

4. Check Your URLs

Make sure that each page of your website has the correct URL slug (what comes after the .com)

You can also use URLs as a place to include keywords. For example, when working with an Ayurvedic Doctor on their about page I could use “/about-their-name” or I could use “/ayurvedic-doctor” since this is a keyword that people are looking for and it’s a high value spot to add a keyword that still speaks to the content on that page.

4. Use Header Tags

Header tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.) organize your content and make it more accessible to both users and search engines. Use headers to structure your content logically, and include keywords where relevant. This improves readability and helps search engines understand your content's hierarchy.

Ensure that each page has only one “Heading One” since the search engines rely on that to understand the main purpose of that page. If you do not have a Heading One tag, this will return as an error.

5. Image ALT text

Images play a crucial role in user experience and SEO. Compress images to reduce load times, and include descriptive alt text. Alt text not only helps visually impaired users but also provides context to search engines.

Squarespace’s AI Tool

In March 2025, Squarespace launched their new SEO AI tool which will scan your website for important SEO basics (titles, descriptions, and alt text) and then generate that content for you.

Go to Settings > Marketing > SEO Appearance and then follow the prompts to review what the AI tool generated for you based on the content on your website.

Post-Launch Tips, Tracking Performance + Improving SEO

After your website is launched you can connect a few different tools to help your search-ability and track the performance of your website…

Google Business Profile

This ensures your business shows up on Google as a location when a person searches for your type of business near them.

Google Search Console + Bing Webmaster Tools

These tools monitor your website looking for any issues that may be affecting your site’s visibility and search-ability.

Google Analytics

This as a more in depth and robust version of the analytics Squarespace provides. Analytics is helpful if you want to create goals for your website and then track how well the site is doing based on those goals.

SEO Space

This is a third party extension you can easily connect to your Squarespace website to help you improve your SEO. They will show you errors to fix and offer suggestions for how to improve your website’s search ranking.

SEO is a longterm strategy for maximizing the performance of your website.

Thinking about keywords, adding content, and keeping track of how well your website is performing while making adjustments accordingly will help you optimize this marketing strategy.
